BBC Award for Muddy Fork

Muddy Fork, Retford’s gardening for wellbeing charity, has had a real boost recently with the news that the project had won a BBC Nottingham ‘Make a Difference’ Award in the Green Award category.

Rose Thorpe, Muddy Fork’s General Manager, went to Nottingham on Muddy Fork’s behalf to be presented with the award. She made a very gracious acceptance speech, in which she acknowledged that Muddy Fork is all about coming together and mutual support. The Green Awards are about making where we live more environmentally friendly and better for nature (Peter Rabbit wouldn’t disagree), but Rose made it clear that there is so much more to Muddy Fork than that.

It’s not all good news this month though as Muddy Fork has also seen another break-in, the second (or third, if you count Peter Rabbit) in just a few weeks. This time a shed door was damaged but thankfully very little was taken. These setbacks consume time, energy and money – but morale remains high and the work goes on.

The memorial bench for Gerald Griffin has now not only been installed, but is currently enhanced by the beautiful flowers presented to Rose at the awards ceremony. The bench offers a quiet place to sit and enjoy the garden, with its elevated position giving a good view across the vegetable beds and beyond.

Another great new development is the arrival of Muddy Fork’s new website and new email system. Referrals can now be sent direct to Rose at

Visit the website and remember that Rose will always be pleased to hear from you, whether you are interested in making a referral on your own behalf or that of someone else, would like to support the garden maybe as a volunteer or by making a donation, or would simply like to find out more.
