Every swimmer from Bassetlaw Swim Squad reached their respective age-group finals in every event during the competition held at Ponds Forge in August. All four swimmers are active members of Retford Swimming Club and train using the facilities at Retford Leisure Centre.

Tom Deeley and Natasha Utley both qualified for the 400m Individual Medley finals, with Utley qualifying for the gruelling 200m Butterfly as well only three days later. Utley, who learned to swim in Worksop Leisure Centre’s Swim School, improved her national ranking from 12th to 6th on the 400m Individual Medley and from 7th to 6th in the 200m ‘fly setting two new lifetime bests.

Jessica Gillat moved from 10th to 4th in the 50m Breaststroke, only marginally missing bronze medal position setting a new personal best, which she set a few hours earlier in the heats. Thomas Johnstone mirrored Gillat’s efforts by setting a new PB in the final of the 50m Butterfly which he set only that morning in the heats. His efforts were rewarded with a huge climb in the rankings from 17th to 8th.

Thomas Deeley had competed at the British Swimming Summer Championships the week previous to the Home Nations competition, contesting the 1500m and 400m Freestyle, finishing 13th and 17th respectively.

Head of Performance Swimming at Barnsley Premier Leisure, Michael Glossop added: “This is such an exciting time for Bassetlaw swimming! We relaunched only five months ago, so to see so many positive results and the magnitude of these improvements is incredible! The swimmers are really focused on improving the smallest of details in order for this progression to occur, not just physically but also with respects to better nutrition and psychological elements of performance swimming.

“A big thanks has to go to the people who organised and ran the interim programme from October 2016 through to March 2017; Simon Ferrarelli, Helen Crossley, George Hobson-Corbett and Carole Johnson. They set the foundations to work from this season.”
