Leverton and District Garden Group

Size matters. Regarding the buying and planting of bulbs this was the message coming loud and clear from this month’s speaker at Leverton and District Garden Group’s meeting. Trudy, from Hollybeck Garden Centre near Southwell, treated the group to an informative and entertaining evening and impressed her audience with her wealth of horticultural knowledge and her enthusiasm for plants and planting.

She gave lots of useful tips about choosing plants and getting the best out of them. In the local villages there will be many gardeners who follow Trudy’s ‘Recipe for Layering a 12” Pot’. In these days of many garden centres being merely retail outlets, Trudy was an antidote to the trend. Watch out for Hollybeck Nurseries’ involvement in a new project at Belvoir Castle next year.

There was the usual raffle and coffee but this month there was also a competition. The task was to paint a terracotta plant pot. The entries were all worthy of a prize, but the winner was Anne Rains. The pots were sold for group funds.
Last Christmas Pauline Berry came to demonstrate seasonal table decorations and members enjoyed her demo so much she is paying a return visit the first Wednesday in December at 7.30pm. There’s no need to be a member to attend the meeting and you’ll be made very welcome. It’s only £4.00 and if you become a member the cost reduces by half. A bargain! There will be Christmas treats as well.
