Gainsborough and District U3A

Gainsborough and District U3A’s annual AGM was held on Thursday 9th March with over 70 members in attendance. The business session passed quickly. During the rest of the meeting, members discussed the possibility of starting new groups. These included: Singing for Pleasure, Armchair Travel, 10 Pin Bowling, Writing for Pleasure and Doing the Things on your Own ‘Bucket’ List. These were just to set minds in motion and we hope that some of these activities will get off the ground during the coming months.

Members’ trip to Hodsock Priory was a resounding success and we were fortunate to choose a bright spring day when the gardens were really at their best. The profusion of colour in the area around the lake and house was really remarkable and we also enjoyed the food with which we were provided. We also visited the Harrogate Spring Flower Show on 20th April and following that arrangements are being made to visit the Well Dressing at Youlgreave and then onto Bakewell and its market, on Monday 26th June.

Alan Bolt came to entertain Gainsborough and District U3A this April. His musical presentation entitled ‘Playing Around’ was light-hearted and great fun. In amongst singing songs and allowing us to join in the ones we knew, he kept up a series of reminiscences. We recalled the times when houses had a front room, which was very seldom used and when the radio (sorry, wireless) only really had the light service and the home service. It really was a good humoured talk.

Adrian Gray will speak to members on 11th May on ‘Thomas Cooper: Radical, Poet and Preacher’. Meetings take place at Gainsborough Methodist Church, North Street, Gainsborough, DN21 2HP and new members are always welcome. Refreshments are from 10.00am and the talk begins at 10.30am after the notices.
