In 2020, for the first time in 45 years, the Gainsborough free traditional Christmas Day Lunch, for those people who would otherwise be spending Christmas Day alone, did not go ahead due to the pandemic. However, the organisers are pleased to announce that this year’s event is going ahead.
Anyone who would otherwise be spending Christmas Day alone is invited to join the Gainsborough Christmas Day Lunch Committee for a free Christmas Day Lunch and turn what would have been a lonely day into a memorable festive occasion.
The organiser, Stan Foster, said: “The event has run at Gainsborough House for many years for which we have been most grateful. This year, due to the large numbers attending in 2019, we needed to move to a larger venue. I am delighted to say, and very grateful to The Blues Club Gainsborough who have kindly offered us their premises, without which we would have disappointed so many people.
“We really didn’t want another year where people spend Christmas Day alone. Of course, the safety and wellbeing of the people attending and the volunteers is paramount and we will ensure we follow the current Government guidelines at all times. The entire purpose of the event has always been to bring people together to celebrate the day and enjoy the festivities in the company of others rather than being alone in isolation.
“This annual celebration is only made possible by the generosity of local businesses and the community who support the event so generously year after year.”
The festive meal will be held on Christmas Day, Saturday 25th December, at The Blues Club North Street, Gainsborough DN21 2HU, starting at 11.00am for tea / coffee and nibbles.
To get into the mood; carols will be sung, entertainment is provided, and Santa Claus will be distributing presents. Transport can be provided for anyone living in Gainsborough and the district who cannot get there under their ‘own steam’.
If anyone expects to be on their own and would like to go as a guest, an invitation letter will be available from 1st October and can be collected from Gainsborough Community Wheels, 18 Parnell Street, Gainsborough DN21 2NB. Alternatively, get one by contacting Stan Foster on 01777 248354 or 07904 212533.
Applications should be returned to Gainsborough Community Wheels by Friday 17th December. They are also looking for volunteer car drivers who can help transport their guests to and from the event.
