It was curtains up at the first concert of the season for the Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire Concert Society. Alim Beisembayev, winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition 2021, wowed the audience with a resplendent array of musical variations. Haydn, Schubert and Liszt took centre stage as this exceptionally talented pianist did the works proud with polish and maturity.
The next artist to grace the floor will be Xuefei Yang, who is acclaimed as one of the world’s finest classical guitarists. Hailed as a musical pioneer, her fascinating journey began after the Cultural Revolution, a period where Western musical instruments and music were banned. Fei was the first-ever guitarist in China to enter a music school and became the first internationally recognised Chinese guitarist on the world stage.
Her programme is entitled ‘Classical and Beyond’. It includes Bach, arrangements of traditional Chinese music and explorations into the realms of Brazilian, French and Spanish music. Classic FM Magazine said that ‘her lyrical playing, warm sound and charismatic artistry connect with audiences far beyond the guitar fraternity’.
