If you have an interest in the arts and would like to learn more, you are invited to one of the Arts Society Dukeries’ meetings. They have monthly lecture meetings on the first Wednesday of the month at the Civic Centre, Carlton-in-Lindrick from 11.00am to 12.00pm (except for summer and winter breaks) and two extra special interest days. They also have trips out to places of interest and a holiday for members.
Their Wednesday 4th December lecture is entitled ‘Shaken by an earthquake: Igor Stravinsky, the Ballet Russes and the astonishing 1913 premiere of the rite of Spring’. Presented by Sandy Burnett, this is the story of one of the greatest creative collaborations of all: Serge Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes, whose team of dancers, choreographers and costume/set designers transformed the expectations of what a night at the theatre could be and the circumstances behind its most notorious stage work of all. Sandy is probably best known to BBC Radio 3 listeners, as he was one of their main core team of presenters for over a decade.
The group also have another extra, Christmas-themed lecture, followed by a lunch, on Friday 13th December this I entitled ‘Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh — why these gifts?’ Speaker Tom Duncan will ask when the ‘Three Wise Men’ came to do homage to the newly born Jesus, what did they bring as gifts and why? Gold is perhaps not too difficult to comprehend — a gesture of honour made at great cost. But, why Frankincense and Myrrh? These are actually more exotic items, though the purpose of these is less understood. Tickets are being sold. Members and guests can pay for either the lecture alone (£6.00) or the lecture and lunch (£14.00).
The society meet at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick S81 9AP. Coffee is served from 10.00am and the lecture is from 11.00am to 12.00pm approximately. There is free car parking.
