The Dukeries Decorative and Fine Arts Society’s next meeting is on Wednesday 7th June at 1.50pm in St Anne’s Church Hall, Worksop S80 1NJ. The lecture will be on ‘The Art and Culture of fin-de-siècle Vienna’ by Gavin Plumley.
At the turn of the last century, Vienna was the capital of a vast empire and one of the most exciting artistic laboratories in the world. It produced painters such as Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, architects like Otto Wagner, Adolf Loos and Josef Hoffmann, the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, the composer Gustav Mahler and the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. Looking at these and other figures in the context of the society in which they worked, this talk asks how and why the ‘City of Dreams’ became a cultural hotbed around 1900.
The society’s July lecture will be on Wednesday 5th July, when the subject will be ‘Foreigners in London 1520 – 1677 — the artists who changed the course of British art’ by Leslie Primo. This will be followed by a delicious Strawberry Tea.
Visitors are very welcome to come to meetings at a cost of £6 per lecture. There is a free car park at the hall. For further details of the full lecture programme and about the society, please speak to Anthony on 01909 731415 or Gill on 01909 540506 or see www.eastmidlandsnadfas.co.uk/dukeries.
