Out and about in the Retford area

The historic market town of Retford was granted its first Charter - enabling the residents to hold their own fair - by Henry III in 1246, and this fact is celebrated annually with Retford Charter Day in May. The town's market traditions still continue today, with weekly markets being held on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Retford is renowned for its quirky and independent shops, suiting the most discerning shopper - and particularly on a market day – making the overall shopping experience one not to be missed!

The town's famous market square – over looked by the town hall - has recently undergone a make-over, and the iconic St Swithun's Church and the Retford Sebastopol Cannon can be found nearby. Retford's heritage lies heavily in farming and this is evident in many of its surrounding picturesque hamlets and villages. The town and its villages host many attractions and Chesterfield Canal runs through its centre. Nearby Wetlands Animal Park and Idle Valley Nature Reserve both offer unique wildlife experiences, and North Leverton Windmill and Sundown Adventureland at Rampton, are also must visits with your family too!

Retford also has strong cultural links, with Bassetlaw Museum being found on Grove Street in its centre and two well respected theatres; The Little Theatre on Wharf Road and The Majestic Theatre on Coronation Street. The famous Pilgrim Fathers are also from Retford and their journey is now told on the Mayflower Trail, a tour which starts at Babworth. Retfordians are proud of their town and all its community activities. As such, it has many local clubs, charities and societies and you will find many of these below.
