wellowmaypole.jpg Wellow Maypole Celebrations

The village of Wellow will once more celebrate the arrival of spring, whatever the weather, on the Late Spring Bank Holiday Monday 27th May. Maypole Day is unique in Nottinghamshire – a traditional family friendly event centred around the village's spectacular 17 metres high painted maypole on the village green.

The Maypole Celebrations have been a feature of Wellow village life for well over a hundred years, and the size of the event and the range of attractions is always a surprise to those new to the event! This year all eyes will be on the Falconry Experience, appearing at Wellow for the first time, giving flying and static demonstrations on the maypole green during the afternoon.

Following the children's procession from St Swithin's Church, the main focus of Maypole Day is, of course, the crowning of the new May Queen. After this, the children perform the variety of intricate maypole dances they have learnt in the weeks leading up to the big day. Providing fun and mischief will be Wellow Jack and his accompanying 'Bogies'.

Apart from all this excitement, there will be live music, traditional Punch and Judy, children's swing boats, and lots of stalls, crafts and games to keep everyone amused. Hot and cold food is available throughout the afternoon, including delicious homemade cakes from the renowned cake stall in the village hall.

Join the fun from 12.00pm to 5.00pm. Admission is free, but the organisers do hope you will buy a programme and some raffle tickets to help fund next year's event. Parking is available at Wellow Dam and Wellow House School. See you on 27th May.
